Coffee Cat: What's In a Name?
By Travis Mamone
The Coffee Cat in EastonMany of you have noticed several changes with Coffee East coffee shop in Easton, MD, especially their name. Is it Coffee East, Coffee Cat, Night Cat, or what? And will anything else change? Hopefully this will clear things up.
Coffee Cat is the café portion, where you can order lattes, sandwiches (try the chicken Panini with goat cheese!), and pastries. Night Cat is where you can see live shows every weekend from a variety of artists. It’s the same building, of course.
But why change the name? As you may or may not know, the coffee shop is now under new management. The same people who now own Coffee Cat also own Hair o’ the Dog Wine and Spirits. So to keep with the pet theme, Coffee East
is now Coffee Cat.
But don’t worry, it’s still the same beloved coffee shop we all know and love. In fact, according to Mark Mangold, who is in charge of booking shows for Night Cat, “Everything Coffee East did, Coffee Cat is doing better now.” During the day, you can surf the web using Coffee Cat’s free Wi-Fi Internet service while drinking coffee, eating a sandwich, or chitchatting with old friends. At night you can order beer or wine and catch a wide variety of artists—from punk rocker Michael Graves to singer/songwriter Ruut to folk singer Sara Lee Guthrie—perform live.
“We’re going to continue to build what we’ve been doing,” Mangold says. “We spent last year finding out what people like. This year, you’re going to see a wide range of musical genres, with more and better musicians.”
Sultana Projects Announces Guided Kayak Paddle Schedule for 2012

Sultana Projects has announced its Public Paddle Schedule for 2012, featuring eight Saturday kayak paddles between May and October on the Sassafras, Chester, and Choptank rivers. Led by Sultana Projects' veteran staff, each 2.5-hour paddle will focus on a particular inhabitant or feature of the river being paddled (see schedule below).
"We've timed many of these paddles to coincide with seasonal, natural events," said Sultana Projects' Director of Educational Programs and trip leader, John Mann. "We'll start this spring with a paddle through a Blue Heron rookery on the Sassafras River, followed by paddles to Bald Eagle and Osprey breeding areas. In July we'll take an incredible trip to see acres of enormous American Lotus flowers in bloom, and in October we'll go to a small tributary off the Chester River renowned for its abundance of seasonal waterfowl."
Single-seat kayaks are provided so all participants need to bring is sunscreen, a bottle of water, and binoculars. All trips take place on flat, protected water, so new and novice kayakers are welcome. Trips are limited to ten paddlers and advance reservations are required ($25 per person). For reservations and additional information, please call the Sultana Projects office at 410-778-5954.
