Cambridge Second Saturday Festivities
Downtown shops, galleries, restaurants gear up for April’s Second Saturday
This weekend’s Second Saturday festivities downtown will cap off a big day in Cambridge, with both the YMCA’s Crab Run Half Marathon and MTS Broadcasting’s Maryland Boatbuilders & Dealers Expo unfolding during the day. The Friends of the Library will be hosting their monthly book sale that afternoon as well.
Afterwards, Second Saturday will offer the perfect opportunity to relax, shop, dine, and unwind from a busy day. Most shops will have a full complement of their new spring merchandise in stock and on display. Chefs at downtown restaurants are breaking out tempting new menu items for their spring menus, and live music will be on tap at the restaurants later in the evening.
“This is my favorite time of the year for Second Saturdays,” said Chad Malkus, the Hodes, Pessin & Katz attorney who serves as president of Cambridge Main Street’s board. “The crowds start picking up this time of year, and everyone seems to have a little extra spring in their step, so to speak.”
Three galleries will be holding special receptions Saturday. The Joie de Vivre Gallery, 410 Race Street, is highlighting new work by the sculptor and furniture maker Paul Lockhart, whose direct metal artworks are one of the gallery’s top sellers. The rear of Joie de Vivre houses the Danny Doughty Gallery, which will also be part of the reception.
The Main Street Gallery, 413 Muir Street, is honoring participating artists in its “Green Show,” which features works on environmental themes and employing recycled materials. Necklaces and earrings crafted from unique materials by the artist Armando Suarez have proven especially popular in this exhibit to date.
The Dorchester Center for the Arts, 321 High Street, is featuring works by artists affiliated with the renowned Washington Printmakers Gallery, including Nina Muys, Rosemary Cooley, and Gabriel Jules. Prints by Martha Graham will also be featured.
As always on Second Saturday, downtown’s restaurants will be busy, so call ahead with your dining reservations. Starting at 8 pm, Canvasback Restaurant, 420 Race Street, will be featuring the popular jazz trio Minus One. At 10 pm, local favorite Mike Elzey’s Mayhem Band will hit the stage at Jimmie & Sook’s, 421 Race Street.
Second Saturdays are organized and promoted by Cambridge Main Street, a volunteer-driven nonprofit working to revitalize the downtown area. Kicking Coffee to the Curb
by Cyndi Paxton Johnson
I did it.
I kicked coffee to the curb - cold turkey! It's been 10 days now - and this is the first day I've gotten through without a nap. I'd also like to apologize to anyone I've spoken with in the past 10 days - and could you possibly email me what we talked about???
This was a spur of the moment decision - no debating, no researching relevant facts. The only thing that entered into the decision was my wonky heartbeat - and the pulse that REFUSED to go below 100 - when I was resting. I have to tell you - going from eight espressos a day to nothing is a jolt to the system - so if you caught me licking the side of your coffee cup, please forgive me! (if you didn't catch me - ignore this message!) [ALSO...reports of me licking the wallpaper at Coffee Kat are widely exaggerated!]
I'm happy to say my heartbeat has returned to normal - and the pulse rate has dropped into the non-alarming range. I can also finally focus again - and can write at least three sentences without losing track of what I was doing!
Best of all - to all my coffee-loving friends out there - I PROMISE to leave you alone and let you enjoy your java without me harping in your ear about the dangers of caffeine and the benefits of quitting! (cause if you'd done that to me two weeks ago I might have decked you!) {grin}
Have a great week!
