Find Unique Gifts, Pamper your Spirit and Have a Ball in Caroline County!

Have you ever said....

The malls are crazy in December!
Those super-stores are a pain - and so huge!
I just don't know what to get {so and so} this season - she's so hard to buy for!
I want to buy local this year and support the Mid Shore community!
To heck with Christmas crazy - I just want to have FUN!

Well, fret no more - because here's the solution! Get thee to these two open houses in Caroline County - have a blast, pamper yourself, and get original (and most welcome) gifts for everyone on your list!

Saturday, December 1st 10am-6pm: Go to Outstanding Dreams Farm [24480 Pinetown Rd Preston,MD] to play with an alpaca, chat with Phil and Vickie Liske, and lose yourself in the luxurious warmth of alpaca knitwear - it's amazing! Their alpaca store has a large assortment of gifts and sundries - all of the finest quality - and many homemade. Alpaca wool gloves will certainly feel good this snowy winter! If you can't make the open house you can still enjoy the store and many gift offerings - give them a call!

Sunday, December 9  1-4pm: Visit Cindy Draper & Associates [311 Franklin St Denton, MD] for their Holiday Open House! This is THE place to go for massages, reiki, acupuncture, foot reflexology and more. Just walking into the Denton historic home is enough to lower your blood pressure a few points. Who wouldn't love a gift certificate for a full body massage ($60)?  The open house will feature many types of gifts, including essential oil products, photographs, afghans, teas, jewelry and more. Don't miss it!

Building a Strong Mid-Shore with a Buy Local Guide to Exceptional Gifts!

Did you know that for every $100 you spend with an independently owned local store $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures? Spend that same money at a national chain store and $43 stays here. Spend it online and $0 is returned to the community. [check out the 3/50 Project for more information]

This year Mid Shore Life is setting up the Buy Local Guide to Exceptional Gifts to promote and encourage everyone to keep those hard earned dollars on the Shore. All types of gifts will be showcased, including traditional presents, gift certificates to local restaurants, tickets to local shows, sports lessons, art classes and more. Think funky, original - and LOCAL!

Right now we're busy gathering gifts and businesses to be included - so spread the word! Contact me at cyndi@midshorelife.com or 443.993.3823 for details on how to be included.  These next two weeks will be crucial - we need to get the gifts listed early to beat the holiday rush!  Thank you!

Give Art for the Holidays Continues: Art Raffle; Harp & Horton to Sign New Book Swanfall

Tired of shopping at crowded, noisy malls?  Come join us at the Main Street Gallery in Cambridge, MD, for a two-month long exhibit of artwork that is perfect for a holiday gift.  Here you can shop for truly unique items from some of Maryland's best crafts people and fine artists.

This multi-media show, Art for the Holidays, includes every category of art and craft.  Paintings, drawings, photographs, pottery, sculpture, jewelry, fabric art, woodwork, and other items for that special person on your gift list will be on display.   Come stroll through our beautiful facility and meet the creative participating artists at our Second Saturday reception.

For this exhibit, Main Street Gallery's resident artists will show smaller works, suitably sized and priced for gift-giving.   They will be joined by other artists and crafts people to bring you a wide variety of artwork.  "Handmade, local art, given as a gift, is not only a tribute to the Eastern Shore region and its people, but is a gift to last a lifetime," said Main Street's Director, Fran Saunders. "We hope everyone will visit us during this holiday season."

Art for the Holidays opened on November 4, 2011 and runs through December 30.  A reception will be held on December 10, from 5 to 9pm.  Light snacks and beverages will be available.

GIFT IDEAS FROM STUDIO WORKS GIFT SHOP AT DCA

Unique holiday gifts are available at the Dorchester Center for the Arts. The Center has a sizeable gift shop, called Studioworks, which offers many specialty items. Included in the inventory are works from local artists that include paintings, photographs, pottery, books, glassware, music, jewelry and much more.

Newly added to the inventory are teddy bears called “Bearlooms”, which are the creations of Woolford artist Martha Spray. These designed and cut bears are made from fine wools, including cashmere, camel hair and Angora goat mohair. They are assembled with a combination of machine and hand sewing, however some are made completely by hand. Although patterns are similar, each bear is unique in its finished design.
