Westphal Jewelers Hosts Benefit for Talbot Special Riders
Join Bill and Lisa Westphal in making this Holiday Season brighter for some very special people. December 16th through the 18th, Westphal Jewelers is offering storewide savings on a collection of beautiful jewelry from some of the leading designers in the country. Proceeds from this unique sale will benefit the Talbot Special Riders, Inc.
The non-profit group, Talbot Special Riders, is a therapeutic horseback riding program providing therapy for physically, mentally and emotionally challenged individuals. “Our curriculum is adjusted to meet the needs, requirements and/or capabilities of our special needs clients,” said Sandy King, Director of Talbot Special Riders. This specialized therapy builds confidence, self esteem, sense of accomplishment, increases attention span and develops the ability to take, understand and follow directions,” continued King. “We work on coordination and spatial relationships, as well as stretching and strengthening exercises. Thus, individuals with disabilities can better realize their potential and find a productive place in our society. The horse becomes the legs of those who cannot walk, the eyes of those who cannot see, and the feeling of” being in charge” of something for those who are so dependent on other people. It is wonderful to witness what this does for their sense of self and pride. “
For individuals who cannot walk, or walk normally, this therapy provides that challenge to their muscles. They have children who begin to speak. One little boy, who never even sat up, is today running around school on his walker. Talbot Special Riders celebrates the success of their riders, and has for the past 30 years.
